Intergenerational fairness is the theme for a Commission made up of 150 randomly selected citizens from all parts of the EU. This European Citizen Panel met for the first time from 12-14.9.25, for a three day session; with two more weekends to follow. Also present: Jörg Tremmel serving as a member of the Knowledge Committee. The background is that for the first time the EU has a 'commissioner' (comparable to a 'minister' in the German government). Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave Glenn Micallef from Malta, the youngest EU Commissioner, the portfolio: Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sports (we reported, see earlier blog post).
What we can expect from the Panel
The European Commission is committed to making panel members active co-creators in shaping the Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness.
Participants from different age groups will engage in open discussions, sharing their unique perspectives and life experiences. Together, they will reflect on what a fairer future for all generations could look like, consider the different ways to achieve that future, and explore practical ideas and actions that could make the most meaningful impact. As the process moves forward, citizens will be the first to examine and provide feedback on specific policy proposals developed by policymakers in collaboration with experts. These proposals aim to build a European Union that ensures fairness across all generations. The panel’s work will culminate in a set of recommendations that will directly contribute to the development of the Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness.

Key questions
Against this background, participants are invited to reflect on the following issues:
- How can we bridge generational divides for the benefit of all by fostering a narrative of solidarity, mutual support and shared responsibility?
- How can we balance the needs and interests of all age groups, including those of future generations?
- How can we think long-term to build a fairer and more resilient society?
